Let's face it guys. Football Sunday and healthy dieting just don't seem to go together. Maybe that's why there just aren't many men's dieting plans out there because they know on Sundays we're doomed. If you're like me a typical football Sunday meal consists of wings, nachos and deep fried cheese sticks but that's not going to cut it now that the season takes up about half a year.
What's a guy to do? There are some healthy eating options if you spend a little time thinking about it. At home you can either put together some of the ideas below or even better, get someone else to do it for you.
- Microwave popcorn. Chop away at the lower fat stuff. It's cheap, it's quick, it's salty and you can eat a ton of it without ingesting much fat. It's perfect in many ways.
- Pretzels. Not exactly a low carb snack but certainly low in fat. Don't get the kind filled with cheese that will last in a nuclear shelter for 100 years but plain ordinary pretzels in whatever size and shape you like. Some of the flavored ones can work but check the package for added fat before buying.
- Low Fat Hot Dogs. By themselves low fat hot dogs pretty much suck but smothered under spicy low fat chili, onions, hot peppers, low fat cheese or sauerkraut and you won't know the difference between tofu, all beef or just parts. The lower the fat the higher the salt so check the labels if that's a concern.
- Vegetables and dip. If you just like to crunch something while watching a game then this maybe a good choice for you. I usually add bell pepper, spring onions and thickly sliced banana peppers to spice things up a little
- Listen to The Fat Guy. You could always just use one of my recipes here. The baked tortilla chips, hot as hell pepper dip, low-fat cheese steak or fast spicy beef chili work great but take a little time so plan accordingly.
At The Bar
Sport bars are not designed for healthy men's dieting. Low fat foods are few and far between so think about lower calorie additions instead.
- No hot buns. If you want a hot sandwich ask them to not toast the bread or bun which usually means slathered with some butter like substance and tossed on the grill adding 200 greasy calories easily.
- No cheese. Stay away from the fried cheese sticks but also if you're getting sandwich, bowl of chili or even going for wings, stay away from the cheese. Get a low fat ranch dip instead of the blue cheese dressing. Eating a burger without cheese is not that bad and it's kosher.
- Pick and choose. If the smell of fries is driving you crazy then get them but order a grilled chicken sandwich with no mayo instead of the bacon cheese burger. If you gotta have that greasy cheese steak then ask for some raw veggies on the side. They have them if they're serving wings.
If you're like me you're not getting out of the bar without ingesting more fat calories then you should. Live with it. It's Sunday and you can make it up tomorrow or later in the day. Eat some peanuts, popcorn or raw veggies if they have them. When you get home eat something low fat for dinner. One day isn't going to kill your diet but that doesn't mean a little moderation and self control won't hurt. Forget the deep fried potato skins because they suck without the bacon and cheese and just order something a little more reasonable.
