Look guy's, we're hunter gatherers. OK, maybe not right now but our ancestors were and our bodies still treat us that way. From an eating stand point it means that if we eat like a squirrel our bodies treat us like squirrels and if we eat like tigers our bodies treat us like tigers.
Squirrels eat small amounts of food and immediately burn the calories to stay alert and active. These fluffy gatherers might eat 8 to 10 times a day. The food is turned into energy right away because they never eat enough for their furry little bodies to go into fat storing mode. Tigers can gorge themselves on up to 40 pounds of meat at once, then they fall asleep and all the food is turned into fat instead of energy. After a few days of fat storing they're ready to go run something else down and eat again. They might have 2 to 3 meals a week and they spend most of their time creating fat. Let's face it, Fat Guys like me would rather eat barbecue like a tiger then eat like a squirrel snacking on sun flower seeds. Maybe if I only ate twice a week and had to run down my own pig before eating that barbecue I could eat like a tiger and never become a fat guy. The truth is that I really do want to eat a few times a day and if I do go hunting I'm sitting perfectly still for hours and not running anything down. The bad news is that because I want to eat every day I either need to eat more like a gatherer (the squirrel) or be a fat guy for life. The good news is that I don't have to stick to the squirrels diet of nuts and seeds. I can eat steak, pizza and drink beer but I just have to do it in smaller portions and snack in between. Who doesn't love snacking? The trick is to keep your body in energy burning mode and never allow it to get into fat storing mode. When you eat a few hundred calories your body goes into gatherer mode and burns up those calories. When you eat 1,000 calories your body thinks you just killed something and goes into fat storing mode. Now if you only eat 300 calories in the morning you'll probably be hungry in a few hours and be starving by lunch time. Make sure you eat a snack in between you meals so that you don't get hungry and gorge yourself later. Try eating 3 small meals and 2 or 3 snacks in between and you'll stay in that gatherer mode of burning up those calories all day long. Save the tiger eating mode for holidays when it's OK to fall asleep after Thanksgiving Turkey. You hunters can find some snack ideas over here.

Green eggs and ham was one of my favorite stories growing up and greens were always part of my diet growing up so it's no wonder that I love this recipe. You can leave out the ham as the mushrooms add plenty of flavor but I like for sentimental reasons. |
